TURN A TINY ROOM INTO A BIG HIT WITH THESE SPACE SAVING TIPS

As you might imagine considering my line of work, I’m a lot more interested in planning a room before it is built or renovated than I am in planning out how to furnish a pre-existing room. With that being said, over the years I have come into contact with a number of brilliant minds who are focused on that very thing. They have given me tips and some of the best have been regarding space saving techniques for smaller rooms. More or less, these tips involve tricking the eye into thinking a room is larger and more spacious than it actually is. I’ve used a few of these in my own home to great success, and in order to pay it forward, I’ve put together a brief list of some of the better ones for your reading (and space saving) pleasure. Hope they help!

USE SCALED FURNITURE

Furniture that brushes up against the boundaries of the room, making everything appear cramped and small. It is recommended to leave a bit of space between the sides furniture and the walls.

It is also wise to avoid large, bulky pieces as they can occupy too much of the usable space in a small room. A sleek couch or chair provides as much sitting space as a weighty, overstuffed one, but takes up considerably less space.

USE WHITE PAINT

White has reflective qualities than can open up a room, making it feel spacious, calm and serene. Painting the walls and ceilings with the same white paint can really enhance this effect. As an added bonus, this will blur the boundary between ceiling and wall, which causes the eyes to travel up and tricks us into believing the ceiling is higher than it actually is. White may be a common choice, but it’s a good one. If you are looking to make the room stand out, or are worried white appears too cold and impersonal, consider pairing your white room with warm elements, such as wood.

STAY LOW TO THE GROUND

When you furnish your room with pieces that sit low to the ground, the extra space above the furniture can create a feeling of openness.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF MIRRORS

When trying to make a small space appear large, mirrors are a lot of help. By placing a mirror near a window, this can create the illusion of openness and spaciousness in any small room.
