TURN AN ORDINARY HOUSE INTO AN EXTRAORDINARY HOME: A 4 STEP PROCESS

We all dream about turning the family house into the perfect home. Unfortunately, these dreams are often left unfulfilled, as people lose time, focus or motivation and let their home renovation plans fall by the wayside. For this reason, I have put together a handy 4 step process for getting your dream project off the ground.

STEP ONE: FORM A COMMITMENT TO ACT

At first glance, this step seems both simple and obvious, and in many ways it is. However, speaking from years of professional experience, I can attest to the fact that this is also the step that derails a great deal of renovation plans.

Dreaming about a new kitchen, bathroom or extension is great, but making that dream a reality is another thing entirely.

It is essential to make a commitment to act in order to move the whole process forward.

STEP TWO: ORGANIZE YOUR OBJECTIVES

After committing to the decision to act, we then want to mentally sort through a few key objectives. I personally like to put these on a list, but some may prefer keeping track of everything mentally. In either case, you must ask yourself the following questions:

1.    Establish a goal. What do you want to have done? (bathroom, kitchen, loft, extension, exterior work, etc)

2.    Establish a time frame? (How soon, what month, etc)

3.      Establish an allocated budget for this work. Consider where you will get the finances to pay for the work (own money, borrowings, loan, etc)

4.      . Who can do this work, who do I trust? (previous builder, recommendations, contractor ads in local paper)

STEP THREE: ASK QUESTIONS

Most likely, you will be hiring outside help to take on your project. While hiring a building contractor is definitely a great idea, it is important that you hire the right building contractor. One of the best ways to secure the right man (or woman) for the job is by asking questions.

By asking your potential hire to provide references, past experiences, background information and so on, (link to article on questions for contractor) you will have a fair idea of the kind of person you’re dealing with, as well as the quality of work you can expect to have done.

STEP FOUR: FIND THE RIGHT FIT

After doing your research and completing steps 1-3, it is important to select the right candidate for the job. If, for example, you have decided that your allocated budget is low, your best course of action may be to hire a young contractor with little experience. If you would prefer to spend more money in order to get guaranteed quality, then perhaps a more seasoned contractor is right for you. Whatever the case, it is important that you find someone who is able to help turn your dream renovation into a reality.
